DESCRIPTION:
This series of six MODULES begins with an "imaginative" true story of how a sculpture became the impetus behind the creation of this online virtual project. The statue is also the logo for the Sandy Spring Slave Museum (Maryland, USA). The statue inspired a painter who first saw the sculpture 23 years earlier in Ghana, but had forgotten...until the "Ancestors" reminded her. Something "amazing" happens to everyone who sees the sculpture and the painting!
UNDER THE BAOBAB TREE: UJIMA: Collective Work and Responsibility is for all ages. First presented on December 28, 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and with only five online practices, each participant remained committed to the project . It introduces eight brave volunteer residents of Montgomery County, Md. who portrayed seven famous Black Artists, and the Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969, who hosted, BLACK ARTISTS IN AMERICA: A Symposium.
In 1968. The Museum presented a "controversial" exhibition, HARLEM ON MY MIND 1900-1968 that later influenced a series of significant changes within America’s recognition of Black Visual Art and Artists. Our virtual project is based on research done by Artist/Scholar Sharon Lee Minor King, Ph.D. and funded by the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Maryland.
The Modules capture the commitment each Reader had to the project, including some humorous moments while trying to navigate through ZOOM. Even during challenging times, this series proves how people can "break through the computer screen", and create community! The Symposium also involves vigorous exchanges between the seven Black artists about WHAT IS BLACK ART? WHO IS A BLACK ARTIST? WHAT MAKES BLACK ART DIFFERENT FROM AFRICAN ART? Many of these questions are still seeking answers, today.
